News and Announcements
It is with great sadness that we announce that the Beacon Hill Baseball and Softball spring season has been cancelled. Unfortunately, it has become very clear that we will not be returning to play ball in the coming weeks. Below we outline implications for the current season and future ball opportunities.
SPRING BALL SEASON
We will be refunding registration fees (minus 2% online payment processing fee) over the next week. We have nearly 400 refunds to process and will begin working on these this weekend.
SUMMER BALL SEASON
It is possible that we will be given permission to play a heavily modified summer season. The specific details have not been finalized by the governing bodies (Provincial Health Authority, City of Victoria, Softball BC, Baseball BC and Little League Canada). If permission is granted, we will do whatever we can to offer some kind of baseball/softball opportunity for our members. Once the game format, timeline and registration fees are solidified, we will reach out to our members to gauge interest and potentially re-open registration.
FALL BALL SEASON / CLINICS
We will make an announcement on a Fall Ball Season and our Fall and Winter Clinics closer to September. Our plan is to offer these programs depending on participation levels and approval from governing bodies.
CURRENT STATE OF GOVERNING BODIES
PROVINCIAL HEALTH OFFICER:
The PHO has asked the various BC amateur sport governing associations to provide guidelines for how kids can return to sport in a safe way to minimize the risk and spread of COVID-19. We believe the intent is to allow some outdoor sports to start later this summer. We anticipate there will be heavy restrictions and rule adaptations in order to minimize risks for all involved.
CITY OF VICTORIA:
All outdoor recreation facilities remain closed until further notice. This includes all ball fields and the batting cage at Hollywood Park. In discussion with the City of Victoria last week, there is currently no timeline for re-opening the parks.
Little League International has taken the difficult step of cancelling both Regional and World Championships. This has had the ripple effect of Little League Canada cancelling Provincial and National Championships. As a result, if there is a summer season, it will likely involve local play only.
SOFTBALL BC / BASEBALL BC:
National and Western Canadian Championships have been cancelled. Play has been suspended until at least June 1st. Return-to-play policies are being developed in the hope that they will be required. Again, if there is a summer season, it will likely involve local play only.
As you can appreciate this is still a very dynamic situation. We will provide an update if and when we are in a position to resume the ball season.
Latest news from our governing associations…
CITY OF VICTORIA:
All outdoor recreation facilities are closed until further notice. This includes all ball fields and the batting cage at Hollywood Park.
LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL:
Little League International recommends that we implement a temporary suspension/delay of all league activities until no earlier than May 11
Softball BC approved contingency plan to suspend sanctioned softball activities until May 1st
What does this mean for registered players at Beacon Hill?
At this time, we do not know if the ball season will go ahead and everything is on hold. Rest assured that if the season is cancelled, we will refund registration fees (minus 2% transaction fee).
We will provide an update as new information becomes available.
Please be aware of the following implications as of March 15th, 2020:
- Opening Ceremonies originally scheduled for Sunday April 5th are now cancelled.
- At the moment, team formation will proceed. Coaches will be in contact with families over the coming weeks and practices will begin at the discretion of coaches.
- The start of the season may be delayed.
- Please don’t send your kids to practice if they are sick.
- Follow BC Health Authority guidelines as they are updated.
