Beach Hill players Gabby Freer (Outfielder) and Kaia Gyorfi (Pitcher) signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the UBC Thunderbirds Softball team in the upcoming 2019 season.

Head Coach Gord Collings has recruited a very strong group of players for the 2019 season that was capped off with the signing of Freer and Gyorfi.

“I am very pleased to have Kaia and Gabby join the Thunderbirds next year. Both are excellent students and the type of character student-athletes we recruit to help maintain and enrich the positive culture of our program.”

Collings: “Kaia has consistently demonstrated her ability to pitch very well against top competition and, with her excellent skills; she will be given every opportunity to become a starting pitcher for us next season. I am also looking forward to adding her bat to our lineup as she is also a very accomplished hitter. I am very excited to have her join our team!”

Gyorfi: “I chose UBC because it was an opportunity for me to obtain a world class education, play softball and still be close enough to visit home on weekends. The campus and housing accommodations are beautiful, and joining the varsity softball team seemed like the perfect way to meet other student athletes with similar goals and interests while simultaneously getting to play the sport I love.”

Collings: “With Gabby’s speed and quickness on the bases as well as her excellent play in the outfield, she will be a great addition to our team. I look forward to her further developing her aggressiveness at the plate and becoming a leadoff hitter for us in the future. I am very pleased she has chosen to attend UBC and be a member of our team next season."

Freer: “My initial decision to attend UBC was driven by academic pursuits. I chose to accept my offer to UBC Sauder School of Business earlier in the spring and later was given the opportunity to join the varsity softball team. I am very excited to continue to play the sport that I love in a great city while only being a ferry ride away from home.”

Freer (3 years with BH) and Gyorfi (9 years with BH) both represented Beacon Hill Little League at the Little League World Series in 2015 (fifth place), 2016 (second place) and 2017 (third place). Tournament Team Manager Bill Hawkins states “both were highly recruited student athletes given their very successful minor softball careers and both averaging over 90% in the classroom. The St Michael’s University graduates are great student athlete representatives of the Beacon Hill Little League program.”

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university. UBC was established in 1908 and is British Columbia’s oldest institution of higher learning. The university is ranked among the top 20 public universities worldwide and top two in Canada.
